The Municipal Government Act

Aligning a province for Smarter Growth.

Understanding the scope and importance Alberta’s largest piece of legislation, the Municipal Government Act (MGA) is important for everybody. It defines how Alberta’s 349 municipalities are governed, funded and developed, whether it’s a summer village of 10 people or a city of over a million.

Many of the 650 sections in the document affect how our urban areas will grow and future housing affordability.

The MGA is undergoing a massive review, to be completed in the fall of 2017. Some of the policy issues on the table surround things like land supply management, paying for infrastructure, environmental preservation and unified training for Subdivision and Development Appeal boards.
