Report: Alberta Cities at the Crossroads

Does Calgary really have anything to learn from Toronto?

As a result of Alberta’s booming economy and unprecedented population growth, our two largest cities face a choice about how to best accommodate their expanding populations — whether to grow out or grow up.

Published by the School of Public Policy at the University of Calgary, this report doesn’t strive to answer that question. Instead, it examines our urban development challenges in historical and comparative perspectives to see how Calgary and Edmonton differ. It also analyzes Toronto and Vancouver with an eye to what the two Alberta cities can learn from their experiences.

It’s a great backgrounder to help understand how policy affects our growth, and if policy can easily be changed.
